GRAPHALLOY CASE
HISTORIES PROBLEM
SOLVING APPLICATION |
YEARS OF DUTY IN THE
COLUMBIA RIVER
Moving
screen keep fish and debris out of the hydro-generating turbines. This submerged
application called for high loads, rough installation, plus the demanding requirement
for year of maintenance-free and lubricatin-free operation. GRAPHALLOY Heavy Duty
Pillow Blocks outlasted the competition and continue to give maintenance-free
service after five years. |
BRANDING HAMS
A gas torch is used to
heat a rotating branding iron in a ham packing production line. The high temperatures
and grease spatter meant that ball bearings gave inadequate life. Standard off-the-shelf
GRAPHALLOY parts meet the requirement for long-life, maintenance-free operation.
|
HIGH TEMPERATURE COAL-ASH
CARRIER
A
manufaturer of coal-ash handling equipment required a busing for a flapper valve
to control hot coal-ash. This is a hign-temperature, abrasive environment. The
flapper valve must operate reliably without sticking and withou lubrication. GRAPHALLOY
was chosen for consistent perfromance - week after week. |
PRINTING BEER CANS
A major brewer uses
GRAPHALLOY Bushings. As beer cans are printed, they move through a high temperature
drying oven. GRAPHALLOY 675 Pillow Blocks were chosen to provide long life and
self-lubrication at these high temperatures. |
HIGH TEMPERATURE CONVEYOR
A flooring
manufacturer used high temperature grease to lubricate a roll conveyor. Its bearings
were lasting 3 to 4 weeks and bearing failures ruined the product. Redesigned,
uing GRAPHALLOY Bearings, these rolls have lasted 13 times longer and are still
running. GRAPHALLOY raised production and eliminated spoilage. |
HIGH RESOLUTION PRINTER
A navy contractor
has developed a high resolution printer for printing sonar images. At 600 lines
per minute stylus is drawn across sensitive paper and a current passed through
the paper, a black line is formed. GRAPHALLOY Brushes were chosen for long life
and consistent operation under battle conditions. |
STEAM- CLEANING CHAIN
DRIVE
A pharmaceutical
manufacturer with a high temperature steam sterilizer couldn't keep a chain conveyor
running. Bronze fluorocarbon shells were unable to handle the load and enviromnet
at the conveyor wheel turns. Redesigned using GRAPHALLOY, the conveyor has functioned
two years without downtime or maintenance. |
AUTOMOTIVE RADIATOS
As sutomotive radiators
travelled to a high temperature brazing oven, ball bearing pillow blocks with
high-temperature lubricant were giving only several days to one month service.
GRAPHALLOY inserts (part 845) were provided as direct replacements for the ball
bearings and have already given seven times longer life. The GRAPHALLOY parts
are expected to run three years, saving thousands of dollars in maintenance and
lost prodution. |
HEAVY CURRENT-CARRYING
BUSHING
The U.S. Bureau of
Mines uses GRAPHALLOY Bushings to carry over 8000 amperes to an electric metal-melting
furnace. These double flanged, split busings stabilize a rotating shaft and carry
the current. Years of reliable operatin have been demonstrated. |
METAL STRAPPING
A manufaturer of metal
strapping was using bronze bushings for sheaves in a hot water cleaning bath.
The bushings werer lasting 2 to 3 months, and failed busings ruined the shafts
as well. Often the sheaves stopped turning and were themselves ruined when the
bronze bushing failed. GRAPHALLOY Bushings were installed and more than doubled
production.... and eliminated costly shaft and sheave reapairs as well. |
HIGH-TEMPERATURE PAINT
LINE CONVEYORS
Paint line drying
ovens use GRAPHALLOY Bearings for the conveyor wheel turns. Self-lubricating Graphalloy
withstands the heat without lubrication, without noise, without maintenance and
without downtime. |
AIRCRAFT JET ENGINE
MANUFATURER
A major aircraft
manufacturer specifies GRAPHALLOY for a critical component used to control engine
cooling air. The design calls for a life of 11,000 cycles and 1000o F, exhaust
blasts. Stable, reliable, enduring GRAPHALLOY fills the bill for low maintenance. |
POLLUTION CONTROL/ASH
PRECIPITATOR
Despite abrasives
and high temperatures (500o F), this chain-driven drag conveyor precipitated ash
from a power plant. Pillow blocks with standard bearings couldn't handle the application.
GRAPHALLOY Bearings, split for easy installation, have kept the precipitator running
and the power plant on-line. |
HEAVY DUTY METAL-CASTING
MACHINES
This international
casting company required an improvement over the three-months life obtained with
grease-lubricated bronze in a linear motion. Molds for molten metals were supported
by bronze bearings on ground shafts. The grese picked up environmentsl dust and
not only wore out the busings but scored the shafts. Dry-
running GRAPHALLOY more than doubled the life of the previously-used bushings
and eliminated the enourmous cost of replacing scored shafts. |
HEAT TRANSFER STAMPING
A
manufacturer of marking equipment required a busing to transfer
heat and to rotate unlubricated. Metal-impregnated GRAPHALLOY
assures a high heat transfer without lubrication in both
low-and high-speed marking systems. GRAPHALLOY Bushings
have met this tough requirement.

GAS TURBINE PACKING
RINGS
An east coast gas utility
finally came back for replacement Copper-GRAPHALLOY Seal Rings were replaced after
15 years of round-the-clock service. |
